The Great Sacrifice (Sermon Notes)

The Great Sacrifice John 1:29-34

His Purpose as the Lamb of God

For us to understand the purpose and the meaning of His coming as the Lamb of God we need to establish it from the beginning.

In Genesis 1:26-28, God created man according to his likeness and without sin (sinful nature)

Image of His likeness, pure and holy (Colossians 3:10) (Ephesians 4:24)

His purpose for man was halted when man disobeyed, sin entered man through Adam (Romans 5:12-13)

He came as a sacrificial Lamb for Justification and redemption (Romans 5:24-26)

Jesus is the Greatest Sacrifice (Hebrews 9:24-26)

Why is He the Greatest Sacrifice?

1. He is the Word incarnate (John 1:14) The infinite became finite, the invisible became tangible, the transcendent became imminent

-He became what he is not previously. He did not cease to be God but He became man. The sinless yet perfect man (Hebrews 7:26)

John 1:14

“The Word”-was His divine title

“Became flesh”-speaks of his holy humanity

The union of the 2 persons of Christ was necessary to be the

Mediator

2. His sacrifice makes it possible for him to dwell among us (John 1:14)

-“dwell” means to make his tabernacle among us.

-The tabernacle is a dwelling place of God.

-by Him, the presence of God can remain in us (John 14:23)

-Before Jesus can reign as a King in our hearts he must be “a lamb of God” first in our hearts, that through his blood, our hearts will be His dwelling place

3. A perfect sacrifice once for all (John 1:29)

-His sacrifice surpasses the animal sacrifices (Hebrews 10:10-14)

4. His sacrifice is a demonstration of God’s love toward us (Romans 5:8-10)

-you don’t choose God, God had chosen you to experience His love by dying on the cross. That kind of love is beyond human understanding

-Exodus 34:6-7

CONCLUSION:

Philippians 2:12

Jesus, become a great sacrifice because he bought us at a high price. That price that he paid shows how valuable we are.

That even though he is rich, he did not use gold nor any precious thing here on earth. But by his blood.

As partakers of this grace, let us walk this newness of life with fear and trembling, reverence and awe. Let us not make his sacrifice for us be in vain.
